Farewell, 'La Stupenda'

7 November 1926 - 10 October 2010

I had several other photos to share
of the wonderful career of Dame Joan
but, unfortunately, my image uploader
isn't working!  Please enjoy the following
from Lucia di Lammermoor; Joan and
the inimitable Luciano Pavarotti.

Pavarotti made his American début with the Greater Miami Opera in February 1965, singing in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor opposite Joan Sutherland on the stage of the Miami-Dade County Auditorium in Miami. The tenor scheduled to perform that night became ill with no understudy. As Sutherland was traveling with him on tour, she recommended the young Pavarotti as he was well acquainted with the role.  Source: Wikipedia

The world has lost a great lady. Thankfully, she will continue to live on through her recordings. May she rest in peace.

Willow...indeed, a great lady, a great ambassador, a legend and a gift to the world of opera. She was always a bright spark on her visits home to Australia; we loved her dearly.

alaine - really the images could do her justice to a certain point beyond which her voice and most especially her presence would continue to carry her and will. there is no loss in a life well-lived. steven

Steven...exactly. Today they're calling her a 'Giant of Opera'; so well-deserved.

I have also done a little tribute to Dame Joan today, Alaine. Her ringing high notes will echo for a long time to come.

Derrick...I loved your tribute. I enjoyed watching her career from afar, although never seeing a live performance. She'll live on through her music, just like Dame Nellie.

Hopefully she will rest in peace. The world will still have her songs.
