The Elegant Birch

Isaac Levitan, Birch Forest Birkenhain 1885-1889

Birch Tree

The birch tree in winter
Leaning over the secret pool
Is Narcissus in love
With the slight white branches,
The slim trunk,
In the dark glass;
But,
Spring coming on,
Is afraid,
And scarfs the white limbs
In green.

Arthur Seymour John Tessimond 1902-1962

Our Birch Avenue

What will it look like twenty,
fifty years from now?

alaine you know i'm a huge admirer of levitan's paintings so i'm biased right from the get go. i love the birch avenue becoming. this area is filled with birch trees. the first nations people relied on them for materials for canoes, medicine, clothing, housing, fuel. i think they probably also loved them for their exquisite beauty. have a lovely spring day! steven

Hello Steven, I didn't realise they were so resourceful; medicine? I must look it up.

Alaine: I wish I had a birch avenue. I do have a lovely woodland path with a few birches sprinkled here and there and they always capture my heart.

My heart is captured each and every time I visit here by your beautiful header! Love, love, love it!!!

Hi Bonnie, the header shot is beautiful; hubby clicks away a lot and has some amazing bird shots.

Oh I do love birch trees! These are beautiful photos. Here our birches are in autumn gold, like little coins fluttering down in the breeze!

Phoenix, they're even elegant in the winter with no leaves.
